Create a lasting legacy
By remembering the National Museum of the Royal Navy in your Will, you can help support our mission in a way that you may not be able to within your lifetime. By leaving a gift to the NMRN, after you have provided for loved ones, you will enable us to preserve, maintain, and showcase the history of the Royal Navy. You will help to tell the stories of the thousands of people who have played a vital role in our Royal Navy, inspiring and educating future generations. Any gift, no matter the size, has a real and meaningful impact on our work, and is gratefully received.
How will my gift be used?
You can choose where your gift will go, deciding the impact of your legacy, in line with your interests, career, or family history. You could choose a specific museum, project, or area that you feel you would most like to support.
For example, you could:
- Grow our collections by helping us to acquire significant and important objects
- Help to preserve our historic fleet, protecting iconic ships including HMS Trincomalee, HMS Caroline, and HMS Victory, funding conservation and research
- Deliver incredible exhibitions, showcasing the history of our Royal Navy and telling the stories of the people who served our nation
- Support a specific part of the museum; by choosing the site you wish to receive your gift
Or, you could leave your legacy to the National Museum of the Royal Navy as a whole, and your gift will be used wherever the need is greatest.
But most importantly, by leaving a gift of any size in your Will, you're making a lasting legacy that will help us tell the epic story of the Royal Navy for generations to come.
How to leave a legacy
The National Museum of the Royal Navy is a member of the National Free Wills Network
Our Free Will Service, in partnership with the National Free Wills Network, means that anyone over 18 can easily write or update a simple Will for free. Most people who use this service choose to leave a gift to our museums, ensuring we can continue to tell the epic story of the Royal Navy and the role it plays in defining our country’s national identity and role on the global stage.
There are two main ways you can include us in your Will
- Residuary gift – This can be all or a percentage of your estate once all other bequests and costs have been deducted.
- Pecuniary gift – This is a particular sum of money e.g. £3,000.
If you wish to amend your Will to include a gift to the National Museum of the Royal Navy, you can use a codicil form. Your solicitor can help you do this, and ensure it is signed and witnessed in the same way as your Will.
To let us know you’d like to use the National Free Wills Network please email fundraising@nmrn.org.uk
When you let us know that you would like to use the National Free Wills Network, NMRN will:
- send you a legacy leaflet with more detailed information
- refer you to the National Free Wills Network
The National Free Wills Network will send a pack directly to you which will contain a list of your local participating solicitors and a form. All you need to do then to get your simple will written for free is contact your chosen solicitor, make an appointment, take your completed form with you.
You are under no obligation to pledge a gift to The National Museum of the Royal Navy nor tell us if you choose to do so. However, if you do choose to leave us a gift, we would love for you to let us know so we can thank you properly. You can do this by emailing fundraising@nmrn.org.uk.
