History

Artefacts chart Nelson’s career across his four well-known battles, which are famously depicted in reliefs around Nelson’s column in London. In particular, Lord Nelson’s exploits at the Battle of the Nile catapulted him into the public consciousness.

The British people’s love of Lord Nelson peaked in 1805 when, during his decisive victory against a combined French and Spanish force off the Cape of Trafalgar, he was fatally wounded. He lived just long enough to see victory. Lord Nelson was the first non-royal to have a state funeral at St Paul’s Cathedral, and his death in the hour of victory made the public’s mourning even greater.
